説明Built in 1898, this Richardsonian Romanesque-style building was designed by Clinton Briggs Ripley & C. W. Dickey for C. S. Desky (Progress Hall) and Bruce Cartwright (Model Block). The two buildings were initially constructed by separate owners, but have since been combined into a single edifice, known as the Model Progress Block. The older Progress Block originally housed a variety of commercial office and retail tenants, as well as an amusement hall and ball room on the top floor, with the Model Block being constructed to utilize the same elevator and have direct access to the office space on the upper floors of the Progress Block, with the Model Clothiers, once located in the building’s ground floor retail space in the early 20th Century, lending the building its name. The buildings feature a rusticated bluestone facade with a corbeled cornice at the roofline, a parapet featuring pointed stones and balustrades, window openings separated by pilasters and featuring transoms, smooth stone trim, an arched side entrance along Beretania Street, and large openings at the retail spaces along Fort Street. The buildings were gut renovated in 1981, replacing the entire interior structure and systems, adding a fourth floor, and opening up the floor plates for more modern office use. The building is presently occupied by Hawaiʻi Pacific University and a variety of first-floor retail tenants.
