| 説明 | Built in 1890, this building was constructed to house the Royal Saloon, owned by W. C. Peacock, whom owned a series of other bars and commercial ventures in Hawaii. The one-story brick building replaced an earlier hotel and saloon, which had stood on the site since 1873, which was demolished to allow for the widening of Merchant Street in 1890. The building features a brick facade with arched openings and decorative stone trim, two-over-two double-hung windows, pilasters, a decorative cornice with a blind balustrade, gabled parapets over multiple entrances, and brackets, a chamfered corner with the building’s primary entrance, and an early 20th Century addition next to the building on Nuuanu Avenue. The saloon closed in 1916, and was sold multiple times, becoming home to the Mercantile Printing Company in 1925, but eventually returned to use as a restaurant after a restoration in 1977, and since 1987, has housed Murphy’s Bar and Grill. The building is a contributing structure in the Merchant Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. |
