説明Built in 1925-26, this Classical Revival-style building with some subtle Art Deco features was designed by Arthur Reynolds, and was constructed to house offices for the Territory of Hawaii, a role it continues to serve, now housing offices for the State of Hawaii. Also known as Kekuanaoa Hale, the building features two one-and-a-half-story wings flanking a central five-and-a-half-story tower, with a raised basement adding a partial floor to the building’s overall height. The building’s wings feature raised corner sections with arched three-bay windows, a simple cornice, two levels of one-over-one double-hung windows on the sides, taller windows on the front facade, and lanais on the rear facade. The tower features a first floor entrance porch with a staircase from ground level, an arched portal at the face of the facade, which features decorative panels, and an entry door with a roman lattice mullion pattern on the transom and transoms of the two flanking windows. Above the entrance, the tower rises four floors, with the top three floors featuring a three-story three-bay portico with corinthian columns, balconies with french doors on the fourth floor, doric pilasters on either side of the bays flanking the portico and at the rear of the portico, a cornice at the base of the roof, and a parapet with gables above, with the sides and rear of the tower featuring bays flanked by simpler doric pilasters. The building houses government offices for the State of Hawaii, and though the interior has been renovated many times and lost a lot of its original features in the process, the lobby and staircase remain largely intact, with a large stained glass dome with the state seal on the ceiling of this space. The building is a contributing structure in the Hawaii Capital Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
