| 説明 | Built in 1906, this Renaissance Revival-style building was designed by Oliver G. Traphagan to house Hawaiian government records. In 1930, two wings were added to either side of the front wing of the original structure and a six-bay addition onto the rear wing, matching the detailing of the original building and adding two additional window bays to the facade, allowing for additional space to store records. The building features a five-bay front facade with pilasters framing each bay, one-over-one double-hung windows, decorative window trim including brackets, sills, and pediments, a simple cornice, a low slope roof with a parapet, a front portico with doric columns, with the details of the front facade carrying over to the sides of the front wing, which are two bays wide. Behind the front wing is a long rear wing with a simpler facade, with pairs of window bays framed by columns and two levels of one-over-one double-hung windows. Inside, the building features a lobby with a stained glass skylight below a glass dome. By 1953, the building had become too small and inadequate for the needs of the Hawaii Archives, so a new building was constructed immediately to the north (rear) of the building, which continues to house the Hawaii State Archives today. After serving as territorial and state government offices for a few decades, the building was restored in 1987, and now houses the offices of the nonprofit organization, Friends of ‘Iolani Palace, whom run the adjacent ‘Iolani Palace as a museum open to tours. The building is a contributing structure in the Hawaii Capital Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. |
