| 説明 | RhynieNearby Rhynie was predominantly settled by Irish Catholics and Scots. Robert Milne of Drumminor House Modbury had a town laid out on his land in 1859. He named the town Rhynie after his birthplace in Scotland near Balmoral Castle. An Irish hotelier, Mr Ryan had set up at this spot on a creek earlier and opened a Hotel. The township soon had a flour mill, a school and stores. A later hotelier was Mr Potts who began a school in 1862. Rhynie got a state school in 1875 and a new school was built in 1885. It closed in 1960. Then Rhynie District Council was established in 1866 and the Council Chamber was built in 1874. This pretty building, made of local pink freestone is now the local hall. The early flourmill built for David Howard in 1867 burnt down in 1884. St Paul’s Anglican Church was built 1873. Rhynie held the remains of ill-fated explorers Burke and Wills overnight in 1862 when they were being returned to Melbourne via Port Adelaide. The branch railway from Riverton to Clare reached the town in 1918. It was eventually extended from Clare to Spalding in 1922. |
