| 説明 | Built in 1917, this concrete lighthouse marks the coast of Diamond Head in Honolulu. The structure replaced an earlier lighthouse on the same spot that was constructed in 1898, which was a 40-foot tall iron frame tower with stone interior walls, which also featured an exterior staircase and a hole through the stone walls in order to allow for an unobstructed view of Barber’s Point from the nearby lookout station. In 1916, deterioration of the original tower was becoming very evident, and work began to replace the original lighthouse with the present lighthouse. Built of reinforced concrete and standing 55 feet tall, utilizing the same lantern room and Fresnel lens, which were placed on a temporary scaffold during the construction of the tower and eventually placed at their present location. The tower features tapered walls that slope inwards towards the top, an internal cast iron spiral staircase, and an adjacent keeper’s cottage, built in 1921, that was only utilized until 1924, when the light was automated. The lighthouse continues to mark the location of Diamond Head to passing ships, and the keeper’s cottage presently serves as the residence of the Commanders of the Fourteenth Coast Guard District. The lighthouse complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. |
