| 説明 | Initially built in 1932, this Spanish Colonial Revival-style school was designed by Guy Rothwell and Marcus Lester to serve the growing south end of Honolulu, and was expanded with the addition of a front auditorium and landmark tower in 1935 with the assistance of the New Deal-era Public Works Administration (PWA). Initially a rather simple structure with one front wing, a central wing, and two low-slope roof rear wings, the addition of the auditorium and tower gave the school a distinctive appearance. To the rear of the original building are several modernist classroom wings added after World War II, as well as a modernist gymnasium. To the northwest of the school is a stadium located in a natural valley, with an outdoor natatorium to the north of the stadium. The front of the school is home to a landscaped courtyard with a large banyan tree and concrete picnic tables, and mosaics created by a collaboration between local artists and students. The school retains most of its original 1930s features, and recently saw the restoration of the tower and auditorium to their original appearance. The school had a mandatory Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program from 1934 until 1966, and saw collateral damage on December 7, 1941, when a mistake led to a Japanese bomber dropping an explosive charge 980 feet from the school, shattering windows in the building. The school is presently the top-ranked public high school in Hawaii, and boasts many notable alumni. |
