| 説明 | Bridges across the River Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead.The Swing Bridge over the Tyne was, at the time of construction in 1876, the largest of the type in the world. It was designed by Northumberland resident Lord Armstrong, is 171 m long x 14 m wide and has a 3,000 ton central rotating span powered by hydraulics. This bridge replaced earlier stone structures that prevented vessels of great size proceeding upstream, thus requiring 'lighters' to bring goods and minerals to larger vessels moored below this point. |
