| 説明 | Built in 1928-1929, this Art Deco-style building on Scott Boulevard in Downtown Covington, Kentucky was constructed for the Monarch Automotive Supply Company. The building housed the operations and warehouse of the Monarch Automotive Supply Company until 1955, when the company moved to a larger warehouse building closer to the Ohio River, now demolished. The building was subsequently purchased as a real estate investment and converted into a medical office building, with the replacement of the original windows, cladding of the first floor of the front facade in granite panels, obscuring the large storefront, and infilling several window openings, as well as reconfiguring the interior, replacing the original building systems, and adding a fire escape on the south side of the building, which necessitated the installation of several new doors and windows, with a parking area being added to the side and rear of the building on what had previously been the site of a set of rowhouses. The three-story building features a buff brick exterior with a limestone parapet cap, limestone trim, horizontal ribbon windows on the second and third floor over the storefront, a vertical window bay over the entryway at the stairs with a recessed spandrel panel and decorative limestone and brick accents, several large second and third story window openings to the north and east, a fire escape on the south facade, an arched doorway on the south end of the front facade at the first floor, a decorative urn at the north end of the parapet, an elevator penthouse, and a one-story rear ell. The building functioned as a medical office building in the configuration set up by the 1955 renovation until 2020, when it was vacated. The building underwent a rehabilitation in 2020-2021, which involved modernizing the building systems, restoring the original window openings to their full size and original appearance where possible, removing the granite panels from the first floor and reopening the storefront, and creating a modern open interior office space with the original brick and plaster exposed. The building is a contributing structure in the Covington Downtown Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and expanded to include this building and several others on Scott Boulevard in 1995. |
