| 説明 | I have volunteered to regularly survey a 1 km square as part of the PoMS pollinator monitoring. I got my initial training and this equipment on WednesdayThis big survey was set up a few years ago in GB but Northern Ireland only joined it last year. My 1 km square is about 20 miles away from home so not too far away. Luckily the process requires no skill in pollinator identification on my part. Essentially on each of the 4 survey visits (warm still days in May/June July/August) a series of 5 pan traps (with water and detergent) are set out across the 1km square. After 6 hours the dead insects are sieved out of the water, placed in ethanol and end up being sent to experts for identification of all the solitary bees and hoverflies. The other flies will have DNA stored.The idea is that this will eventually provide good data on pollinator population status and trends. The survey will continue for at least the next decade.
