| 説明 | Built between 1887 and 1894, this Renaissance Revival-style mansion was designed by Samuel Hannaford for George Wiedemann, a local brewery owner, and his wife, Agnes Wiedemann. The house was still under construction in 1890 when George Wiedemann passed away, though his widow, Agnes, lived in the house from 1894 until her death in 1898, upon which the house was inherited by their eldest son, Charles Wiedemann. The house remained under the ownership of the Wiedemann family for several decades, being struck by lightning at some point during this time, damage from which is evident inside the house. The house was sold to the Diocese of Covington by the Wiedemann family in 1951, and was home to Bishop William Mulloy and later, Bishop Ackerman, thereafter becoming home to the Christian Bothers whom managed the adjacent Newport Central Catholic High School, and then becoming a convent for the Sisters of Our Lady of Providence until 1980. The house was sold to Dr. Tom Powell by the Diocese in 1981, after which it underwent a major rehabilitation and restoration project, with a large section of the grounds being parceled off and sold for development, including the carriage house, which has been converted into a private residence. In 2005, the house was sold to Roger and Donna Weddle, and underwent another restoration and rehabilitation, and now serves as an event venue. The house features a large slate hipped roof, red brick exterior with red sandstone trim and details, dentils around the base of the roof, dormers with ornately trimmed gable parapets, including cartouches, pilasters, urns, and window surrounds, one-over-one double-hung windows with decorative carved stone headers, a two-story semi-circular bay window on the west facade, a two-story chamfered bay window on the east facade, an enclosed second-story rear porch, arched decorative stained glass window at the stairwell, a broad front porch with a semi-circular western end, featuring decorative columns and a decorative balustrade, and a rough-hewn stone base. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and is a contributing structure in the Cote Brilliante Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. |
