| 説明 | Built in 1858, this Greek Revival and Gothic Revival-style church houses the Perryville United Methodist Church, founded in the early 19th Century. The church served as a field hospital for injured soldiers and civilians following the Battle of Perryville in 1862, which resulted in the church being damaged and later being awarded reparations in the early 20th Century for the damages. The building was originally constructed in the Greek Revival style, with a red brick exterior, front gable roof, brick pilasters with doric capitals, two rectangular front door openings, a simple cornice, and rectangular stained glass windows on the sides of the structure remaining from this time, with the original multi-tier rooftop belltower/cupola having been removed. The church was renovated in 1908 with the addition of new stained glass windows, and again in 1915 with the addition of the Matilda Gray Memorial Bell Tower and a west wing of the building to the rear of the tower in the Gothic Revival style, and the addition of a large Gothic stained glass window at the center of the front facade. The bell tower features a red brick exterior, gothic arched louver openings, rectangular stained glass windows and door openings, a large datestone over the front entrance, a low-slope pyramidal hipped roof, and limestone trim, as well as two levels of three triple stained glass windows in rectangular openings to the rear of the tower. Two more additions were made later to the rear of the church, enlarging it to its present size. The original section of the church and the first addition is a contributing structure in the Perryville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The later additions are noncontributing. |
