説明 | Built in 1898, this Richardson Romanesque-style fire station on 6th Street in Covington's Mutter Gottes neighborhood was designed by local architect Daniel Seger to replace an earlier building on the same site, housing the Covington Fire Department Company 1. The building features a rusticated front facade on the first floor with two large arched door openings, which once provided access for fire equipment in and out of the garage on this level, flanked by three smaller openings, one of which has a door for people to access the interior, the other two housing one-over-one double-hung windows. Above the door openings, there are arched one-over-one double-hung windows in groups of three, separated by pilasters, with the central, taller windows having stained glass transoms. The top of the builidng has a parapet with trim and crenellations. The sides of the building are plainer, featuring more windows and doors, with the eastern portion of the brick structure extending further to the rear than the western portion. The building housed the operations of the Covington Fire Department until a new, larger station was built on Scott Boulevard in 1975, which consolidated the operations of several older, smaller stations scattered about the northern portion of Covington. The building was shortly thereafter adaptively reused as a restaurant, before being converted into a bar. The building is a contributing structure in the Covington Downtown Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. |
