ShookRemark: The Northern Indiana Normal School and Business Institute, which operated from 1873 through 1900, later to be renamed Valparaiso College in 1900, and then renamed again as Valparaiso University in 1906, issued scrip as a form of trade. The Institute is known to have issued scrip in denominations of 1¢, 2¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, $1, $2, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, $1,000, and $5,000, which was backed by its deposits fictitiously held in the First National Bank located in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, or the Merchants Commercial Bank of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. This represents an example of an uncirculated 10¢ scrip note.Schingoethe and Schingoethe (1993) do not list an example of this scrip though it is identical in appearance to the class of scrip listed as IN-875 (p. 83).
