説明 | Built in 1851-1852, this two-story Greek Revival-style house was constructed by Robert Russell, Jr. for Samuel Porter Barbee, whom did not live in the house for very long. In the mid-to-late 19th Century, the house was home to Dr. Stephen L. Yerkes, whom was the president of the pro-Union Danville Theological Seminary. In 1908, the house was purchased by Professor George McClure, Sr., whom taught at the Kentucky School for the Deaf, with the house being inherited by his son, Doctor George M. McClure, who lived in the house until at least the 1980s. The house features a buff brick exterior, a front facade three bays wide with eight-over-eight double-hung windows, stone lintels and sills, a simple cornice, and a recessed two-story portico with a paneled ceiling, two doric columns and flanked by two doric pilasters, with a front door in the center bay featuring a decorative surround with doric columns and a cornice. The portico once had doors leading into the rooms to the north and south, which were filled in sometime in the 19th Century. The south facade features a large one-story bay window at the front wing, which is a later addition, with wood cladding on the rear wing, which features multiple gables, and a rough-hewn stone base. The north facade features a more rambling assortment of windows, and is clad in buff brick, with a one-story bay window on the rear wing, eight-over-eight windows on the two-story portion of the rear wing, and a two-over-two window and fixed window on the one-story portion of the rear wing, which is a later addition. The house also has the unique feature of a parapet at the front wing with a rear shed roof, which gives it a very boxy appearance. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and is considered to be one of the best examples of residential Greek Revival-style architecture in the state of Kentucky. |
