| 説明 | Built in 1832, this Gothic Revival-style church was constructed by Robert Russell for the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Danville, organized in 1783. The church initially met in the old meetinghouse and courthouse at Constitution Square in the 1780s, before building a wood-frame structure adjacent to the present church in 1789. In 1812, a brick church was built on the site, before additional land was purchased and the present church constructed. As originally built, the building had two doors facing Main Street, with the facade on this side of the building altered with the addition of a bell tower and vestibule in 1853. In 1880, the building was further modified with the alteration of the windows and transoms to the Gothic Revival style now seen on the exterior, as well as the addition of crenellated parapets on the Main Street facade and bell tower. The building features a front facade facing north towards Main Street with a crenellated gabled parapet terminating in two angled buttresses, a central bell tower with angled buttresses at the corners topped with a crenellated parapet, a large lancet stained glass window in the bell tower over the large central doorway, featuring a lancet shape, with a belfry featuring lancet vents, flanked by two smaller lancet windows and doors. The sides of the building are simpler, featuring lancet stained glass windows, with buttresses between each bay, and a rough-hewn stone base. The south side of the building has several additions constructed to expand the facilities and program of the church beginning in the early 20th Century, with the most recent addition being the largest, standing southwest of the original church building. All additions to the church are considered noncontributing to its historic significance. The building stands adjacent to McDowell Park, which is home to the graves of many prominent early citizens of Danville, and several monuments, the most controversial of which was the Confederate Monument, dedicated in 1910, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, and removed from the location in December of 2021, being relocated to Meade County, almost 100 miles to the northwest. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. |
