| 説明 | Built between 1951 and 1953, this Modern school building formerly housed Jennie Rogers Elementary School, and was built on the site of a mid-19th Century Greek Revival-style mansion, known as Mount Airy. The school replaced a previous late 19th Century school building at the corner of Broadway Street and Jackson Street, which was destroyed by a devastating in 1951. Named for the last principal of the previous school, Jennie Rogers Elementary features many Mid Century Modern motifs, including simple geometric forms and abstract details, a front entrance with stone cladding and curved walls that arc outwards, giving the impression of the building welcoming people to come inside, with a glass curtain wall at the entry, with an integrated planter, large window bays that were once occupied by sleek aluminum windows but were later infilled with EIFS-clad panels and smaller windows during a renovation in the late 1990s, a large gymnasium at the intersection of the school’s two wings with a gabled roof and original glass block and aluminum windows, a side entrance at the gym with a covered porch featuring a unique geometric screen with a brickwork motif, clerestory windows and raised roofs at the hallways to allow for ample natural light, doors on the interior with circular lights, glazed brick walls on the interior, stone end walls and parapets at the ends of the wings with side entrances featuring porches, the south entrance having a porch with brick walls and small square openings trimmed with limestone, and the north entrance featuring an integrated planter, and a playground to the rear that is framed by the building on two sides. The building remained in use as an elementary school in the Danville Independent Schools district until 2018, when it was closed, becoming the temporary home of the Hogsett Primary School during renovations to their building. The building was sold to the city of Danville in 2021, with the intention of it becoming a community center to serve the population of the city with multiple functions. |
