説明 | Image Title: Grand Coulee Dam Date: March 17, 1948Place: Columbia River, Grand Coulee, WashingtonDescription/Caption: On verso, "ADVANCE-for release Sunday, March 21, 1948A MILLION POUNDS OF SUSPENSE - weighing 1,174,000 pounds, this giant rotor for the ninth and final big generating unit in the West Powerhouse at the Grand Coulee Dam is lowered into place preparatory to beginning commercial operation a few weeks hence. Westinghouse Electric Corporation employees are stationed with spacing sticks around the rim of the stator. Atop the rotor and beneath the lifting beam are riggers checking measurements before signaling crane operators. This unit, known as L-9, ranks with the other big generators as the mightiest in the world. When it begins operating, the West Powerhouse will have a total installed rated commercial capacity of 972,000 kilowatts, or about twice as large as any other power plant in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau of Reclamation already has ordered the first six of nine equally large units for the East Powerhouse at the dam.
