説明Built in 1899, this Renaissance Revival-style train station was designed by Charles S. Frost for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, also known as the Milwaukee Road. Replacing an earlier train station on the same site, built in the Italianate and Second Empire styles in 1879, this building remained in operation for passenger service until 1971, when it ceased operation, and had rail access that formerly connected to the train hall in the rear removed in 1980. Between 1998 and 2001, the depot was rehabilitated for adaptive reuse as The Depot Minneapolis, A Renaissance Hotel, which involved demolishing most of the adjacent freight house, built in 1879, and building a six-story building with similar brick to the north of the historic structure on the site of the freight house, and a separate, four-story Residence Inn Hotel to the east of the Renaissance Hotel. The train shed was enclosed and converted into a water park and skating rink, though the water park was closed in 2015 and the space reconfigured to provide additional hotel rooms. The building features an orange brick facade with a rusticated brownstone base, a long steel and glass train shed to the rear, arched entryways, a central tower, once crowned with a pinnacle based on the famous Giralda bell tower of the Seville Cathedral in Spain, which was knocked down by high winds in 1941 and replaced with a flat roof, four clock faces and Milwaukee Road signs at the top of the remaining tower, arched window bays with recessed spandrel panels and terra cotta trim, a decorative terra cotta cornice and parapet, an oxeye window over the front entrance on the tower, and several blind arches at the top of the tower. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 alongside the adjacent freight depot.
