説明 | This first class passenger saloon coach was built in 1885 by the Metropolitan Railway Carriage & Wagon Company in Birmingham. It is believed to have been used by Lord Kitchener when he was Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Army, during the Sudan War between 1896 and 1898. A brass plate inside the vehicle bears the inscription: “This coach did service on the Suakin-Berber railway. It is reported to have been the saloon coach used by Lord Kitchener”. The desert railway of Sudan was 576 miles long and was built under the supervision of Royal Engineers.Whether this carriage was actually used by Kitchener or not cannot be confirmed. What can be confirmed, however, is that by 1910 it had returned to the UK and was in use as a VIP transport at the Shoeburyness artillery ranges, where it is known to have transported several other well-known visitors including Winston Churchill and HRH King George V.It is now part of the Royal Engineers Museum collection and is on display in the No3 Covered Slip, known on site as ‘The Big Space’, at Chatham Historic DockyardChatham, Kent, UK27th July 2021 |
