説明Merriton. This region along the Broughton River was in one of the first Agricultural areas nominated in the 1869 Strangways act to allow the purchase of land in South Australia on credit. All land was sold, according to the principles of Wakefield’s systematic colonisation system, at public auction for at least one pound per acre. In this area in 1869 land could be purchased for ten percent deposit with the balance to paid to the government within four years. This a settlement emerged here in the early 1870s. It was named Merriton after George Merrit, a local farmer who was also the president of the local cricket club. The old bridge across the Broughton River at Merriton is heritage listed. It is now disused. It was built in 1879 when five iron bridges like this were erected in South Australia by the government. Most bridges in rural SA at the time usually had stone arches for small spans. The Merriton Bridge consists of two arched trusses of wrought iron with a straight bottom line to support the girders under the roadway. The upper section has a series of triangular trusses which are all hand riveted. The trusses span a distances of roughly 16 to 24 metres. When the highway was realigned to bypass Merriton a new bridge was built across the Broughton River for the road to Port Broughton. The railway from Redhill to Port Pirie reached Merriton in 1937. But in 1970 it was replaced with a new standard gauge line to Crystal Brook which bypassed Merriton and its wooden station closed. Merriton has a fine Gothic style state government school (1893) but the first school roomed opened in 1880 as the town became stablished. The former Methodist Church, which is now a residence, was built in 1901 the year after the union of the Wesleyan, Primitive and Bible Christian Methodists. The church closed in 1990 and is well maintained as a private residence. The outstanding Institute built was a Soldiers Memorial Hall in a classical style with balustrades, classical style porch, street facing gable etc. The Institute operated as a public hall until 1993. Its foundation stone as laid by Mr R Nicholls a local Member of Parliament. It too is now a fine private residence. In its heyday Merriton also had a blacksmiths. The blacksmiths operated for a long period from 1878 to 1970. Merriton School closed in 1971 just after the standardised railway line to Crystal Brook bypassed Merriton causing the railway sale yards to close. From 1970 road traffic on the highway no longer passed through the town.
