| 説明 | PLEASE, NO invitations or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks.I had heard about this place but have never been here before. I do not know what some of the buildings were used for - I took some guesses. I would like to visit again but I would take a large light as many places were dark, also be careful as there are hazards everywhere - broken glass and rubble. I had lots of places to go so my visit here was not that long.-------------------------------------------------------------------The reason for this military base was classified until 1991 with "oceanographic research" given as the cover for the actual purpose of undersea surveillance. The SOSUS (Sound Surveillance System) was a passive sonar system developed by the United States Navy to track Soviet submarines. This facility opened in 1955 during the Cold War next to and including a part of what had been a World War II installation, HMCS Shelburne. When decommissioned August 1, 1994 it was the oldest (SOSUS) facility as the other shore facilities had been consolidated or shut down. The station itself was decommissioned entirely as a military facility by the Canadian Forces on March 13, 1995.The closed facility was put to civilian uses in 1995.In late November 2011, the facility was sold to a marine construction contracting company. Shortly after the purchase, the buyer said he had no immediate plans for the property.Numerous buildings sit in a derelict condition open to the elements. |
