| 説明 | Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church Wayville. The Russian Orthodox Church is one of the five semi-autonomous patriarchates of the Eastern Christian Churches- which began with Constantinople (Greek), Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem. The Russian Orthodox Church dates back to 988. In 2018 the Russian Church severed all ties with the patriarchate of Constantinople as it recognised the Ukrainian Orthodox Church! Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church at Wayville features to distinctive onion domes painted blue with gold stars typical of churches in Russia. When the Commonwealth of Australia was formed in 1901 only 251 people of Russian descent lived in South Australia. Most were Russian Jews who had escaped persecution by Tsar Nicholas II. More Russians again came to Australia in the early 1920s after the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the defeat of the White Army (anti Bolsheviks) by the Red Army (the Bolsheviks.) They embarked from Manchuria after their escape from Siberia. But the main influx of Russian migrants came after World War Two starting in 1949. Most were displaced persons who would have been persecuted or imprisoned had they returned to Russia. They were given two year contracts to be manual workers for the Australian government before they were left to their own devises. More came in 1953 when the Korean War ended. In the mid 1950s the Russian community purchased two blocks of land at Wayville. Volunteers set to work to construct their church and in 1969 their traditional square shaped Church of Saint Nicholas opened. Although the exterior is rather plain the interior is sumptuously decorated. In 1990-91 a Russian artist Antonina Ganin painted the interior frescoes with gold backgrounds in typical Russian Orthodox style. The saints in the icons have the appearance of glittering Byzantine mosaics or paintings. About 7,000 people in South Australia claim Russian descent today. |
