| 説明 | The ruined Italianate mansion of Witley Court is in a rural Worcestershire location near the village of Great Witley and around five miles from Stourport. On the site of an earlier manor house, a 17th century great house was built for the Foley family, parts of these structures being incorporated in a massive expansion of the mansion to the design of John Nash in the early 19th century, much of his work in turn being expanded upon by Samuel Daukes, thus resulting in what was really a palace. From the early 1800s the mansion was in the hands of the Earls of Dudley but, as their fortunes waned following the 1914-1918 war it passed out of their hands, a fire in 1937 causing such devastation as to leave little more than a shell. After many years of decay it was taken over by the Department of the Environment in 1972 and is now in the hands of English Heritage. Both the ruin and the attached church are Listed Grade 1.On the left is the Perseus and Andromeda fountain, completed in 1860 and one of the biggest fountains in Europe. After many years of dereliction (see above) it has been restored to full function, with a central spout that rises to 36 metres / 118 feet. A dull day with heavy showers was not the best for photographs. |
