| 説明 | Fritz-X was a precision-guided anti-shipping glide bomb, developed in Germany during WW2. Designed as a penetration weapon for use against armoured targets such as Cruisers or Battleships, it was usually carried by a Dornier Do217K-2.The only ship confirmed to have been sunk by Fritz-X was the Italian Flagship, the Battleship ‘Roma’ on 9th September 1943. After the Italian armistice with the Allies the Italian fleet sailed from La Spezia for Tunisia, but were attacked by German forces to stop them falling into Allied hands. The ‘Roma’ was hit twice and sunk after her magazine exploded, killing 1,393 men. The ‘Italia’ was also damaged in the same attack but did reach Tunisia. Although several other successful attacks were carried out and several ships damaged or put out of action, none were sunk. This example was transferred to the Smithsonian Institute in 1984 from the US Navy Explosive Ordnance School in Indian Head, Maryland. It is now part of the National Air and Space Museum and is seen on display in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F.
