| 説明 | Built between 1890 and 1892, this brick Gothic Revival-style church was formerly the home of the Amos Shinkle Methodist Church, named in honor of Shinkle’s contributions to the congregation’s formation and growth. Founded in 1867, the congregation initially made its home in a warehouse on Byrd Street, constructing a small wood-frame church building on the present site in 1869. The church building was constructed to meet the needs of the growing congregation, and features two towers with steep pyramidal roofs, quatrefoil gable windows, gable parapets, doors and stained glass windows with gothic arches, and a rear wing with double-hung three-over-two Gothic windows, which housed sunday school rooms, a fellowship hall, and other service areas of the church. In 1915, a tornado ripped the roof off of one of the church’s towers, which was quickly replaced. By the 1920s, the last lots in the surrounding Austinburg and Helentown neighborhoods became developed, leading to a stagnation in the church’s growth. As demographic shifts began to see those with more wealth and whom were protestant leaving the city after World War II, it was foreseen that the church and the congregation of the nearby St. Luke (11th Street) Methodist Church would have to eventually merge, however, this never happened, with the decline of Shinkle Methodist continuing into the 1980s, finally selling the building in 1988, with the congregation moving to a new location in the suburban town of Independence, Kentucky. The church is presently utilized as a private residence, which tastefully has maintained many historic elements while adapting the spaces to the needs of such a use. The church is located on 15th Street in Covington’s Helentown neighborhood, and is a contributing structure in the Helentown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. |
