説明Built in the 19th Century, this simple vernacular two-bay brick townhouse has, since 1967, been home to the US Chito-Kai Headquarters, housed in the structure, dubbed the Yoseikan, and an addition with a wood-shingled mansard roof on the front, a fenced zen garden, and a karate school and offices inside. Created by William J. Dometrich (1938-2012), he learned Chito-Ryu Karate when he traveled to Japan in 1954 while in the United States Army, before returning to the United States and founding the school in 1961 under a different name, moving it to its present location and dubbing it the Yoseikan in 1967. Dometrich served as a Covington Police Officer from 1964 until 1986, eventually returning to the Army and serving in the 11th Special Forces Group based out of Louisville, Kentucky, and serving as a sheriff in Boone County before retiring in 2008. A member of the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai, a martial arts organization originally founded in Kyoto in 1895, he was awarded the title of Hanshi in 1999. While Dometrich was in Kyoto, Japan in 2008, he was promoted to the rank of Ku Dan, also known as a 9th Degree Black Belt. The house is located on Martin Street in Covington’s Helentown neighborhood, and is a contributing structure in the Helentown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, while the school and zen garden are designated as non-contributing structures.
