説明Kaniva.A South Australian named Heighway Jones squatted on land here in 1845. His Tattyara run was gazetted and officially leased to him in 1851.Other early squatters on adjoining runs were Matthew Baird of Lockart station which was approved in 1848 but it was later known that this station was on disputed territory because of the incorrect position of the border away from the 141 meridian as gazetted. Both of these runs changed hands frequently in the first few years of their existence. Eventually George Ormerod of Robe and Naracoorte took over the leasehold in 1861. But he also soon sold the leasehold to others. The first farmers came in 1875 selecting freehold land when runs were resumed by the government. Many of them were of German background and almost 100% of them were from SA. Many South Australians knew of this country from the Gold Escorts of 1851-52. A tiny settlement called Budjik emerged in the late 1870s with a flourmill by 1881. Its name was then changed to Kaniva in 1882 when the first Post Office opened. Lillimur was expected to be the main town of the district but its early prominence faded away and Kaniva was gazetted as a town in 1885 just before the intercolonial railway reached the town in 1886. The railway bypassed Lillimur. 1889 was a year of great construction in Kaniva with starts made on the stone Anglican Church, the new Post Office and the Mechanics Institute (now demolished) and the Kaniva Presbyterian Church which still operates. The town had a small boom period from that time into the early 20th century and it soon had two hotels, Mechanics Institute, school, numerous stores and a railway station. The later Commercial Hotel built in 1927(the original Commercial Hotel opened in 1886) is a good example of an Art Deco Australian hotel. The Shire Hall was built in 1927 with the opening in 1929 just before the Great Depression hit the struggling Wimmera farmers. The town had no Methodist church as a Wesleyan Methodist church had opened earlier at Lillimur. The silo art here was completed in January 2021. The artist David Lee Pereira chose a hawk and some Australian native orchids for his silo art.
