The Monumental Synagogue - The ForecourtThe synagogue main hall was entered from the east through a colonnaded forecourt created with four quadrangular corner pillars decorated with leaning half-columns and 10 columns. The pillars have Ionic capitals. The forecourt was roofed around the sides but open to the sky in the center. The floors were decorated with mosaics arranged in rectangular panels spanning the width of the four porticoes. The mosaics are exclusively geometric in design, with small polychrome tesserae forming complex interlocking patterns. At the center of the forecourt, there is a large krater or urn, a replica of the marble original; it was a fountain at which congregants washed their hands before prayer. The surrounding pool was originally paved with flat stones, probably marble. On the western wall three doors mark the entrance to the synagogue main hall.
