説明 | A model of the ocean liner RMS Servia at the Science Museum, South Kensington, 14 April 2007.The Servia was built by J & G Thomson, Clydebank for the Cunard Line and was completed in 1881. She was of a highly innovative design, was the first big ocean liner to be built of steel. Her passenger accommodation was of unprecedented luxury and had electric light installed. She had only the minimum of cargo space. As such, she is considered the first truly modern specialised passenger ocean liner. The Servia measured 515 ft x 52 ft x 41 ft, weighed 7,392 tons gross and was the second largest ship in the world after the SS Great Eastern. She had 10,300 ihp reciprocating steam engines and a single screw. She had a maximum speed of 17.85 kts and had an auxiliary sailing rig with three barque-rigged masts. With the entry into service of Cunard’s RMS Campania and Lucania in 1893, the Servia was relegated from the Liverpool – New York ‘express’ service to Cunard’s ‘intermediate’ service. The Servia was built to Admiralty Armed Merchant Cruiser standards and although she was never converted to such, in the Boer War she was commandeered by the Admiralty as a troopship. She was broken up in 1902. |
