| 説明 | A model of the Elizabeth Jonas, a Ship Royal at the Science Museum, South Kensington, 15 November 2008. With the burning of the Harry Grace a Dieu (then named Edward) at Woolwich in 1553 a new flagship of the English Fleet was needed. Originally to be named Edward, the Elizabeth Jonas was renamed before completion. The Elizabeth Jonas was designed by the Master Shipwright of the Royal Dockyard, Woolwich, Phineas Pett and she illustrated the huge advances in warship design since ‘The Great Harry’ was built. The Elizabeth Jonas was laid down in 1557 and launched in 1559. She was 800 tons burthen, measured 100 ft x 38 ft x 18 ft and was armed with 42 guns. She was rebuilt in 1597-98 when her upper works were cut down to improve stability and her armament was increased to 55 guns. She was broken up in 1618. The Elizabeth Jonas was a 4-masted square-rigged galleon which was ‘race-built’, an innovative change in design being developed in England at the time; such English galleons emphasised speed and agility rather than size, as had been traditional. As a result, when the gigantic Spanish Armada attempted to invade England in 1588, the small English fleet ran rings around the huge Spanish galleons, very imposing though they were. Coupled with the far more advanced cannon technology also being developed in England at the time, which enabled standardised cannon balls for standardised, precision-built, reliable iron cannon (which had been very difficult to produce), together with the English emphasis on gunnery and rapid fire, all this led to the defeat of the Armada. Sir Robert Southwell commanded the Elizabeth Jonas in the Armada battles. |
