説明 | Keystone Pt. Ferry Dock, Whidbey Island, WAOctober, 2010First, let me say, I find the scientific name of this bird very amusing. "Histrionic" means "deliberately affected or self-consciously emotional; overly dramatic in behavior or speech." So this bird was so dramatic they named it twice. The colors were very bright, this picture doesn't do it justice. Here are all the flickr pictures tagged "harlequin ducks."Other common names and nicknames for this duck include Lords and Ladies (in northeastern North America), totem pole duck, glacier duck, rock duck, and painted duck. (Wikipedia)The harlequin duck population is thought to be stable, but because they take 3 to 5 years to successfully breed, the population takes a long time to rebound from threats. In Washington, the main threat to breeding grounds are logging of mountainsides. Logging removes nesting habitat and can add silt to mountain streams, damaging food sources. (BirdWeb) |
