説明Often referred to as the “Old Slave Market,” this structure was originally constructed of masonry and wood in 1824, replacing an earlier market from the Spanish and British colonial period that stood closer to the Matanzas River. The market was a place primarily for the selling of food and other goods, which also often included enslaved people, though this made up a much smaller volume of the trade that occurred at the market. Following the Civil War, the market continued to be used as a public marketplace, selling mostly food. In 1887, a fire destroyed the wooden antebellum roof structure, and it was replaced with a near-replica with two additional bays in 1888, which began to appear on postcards, labeled as the “Old Slave Market”. In the 1960s, during the Civil Rights Movement, to commemorate the memory of those who were sold at the market, nightly marches were held in and around the market, with Martin Luther King, Jr. taking part in several of these demonstrations. In 2011, the first Civil Rights monument in St. Augustine was dedicated at the market, acknowledging its history as a site where human beings were legally sold for their labor and bodies to be exploited, and commemorating the demonstrations that took place at the market.
