| 説明 | This unassuming box costs some $5 million, and is a hydrogen-based MASER.It's function is simple: it generates a very regular clock signal (a signal with a fixed frequency). This clock signal is used to calibrate readings coming from the 28-mile Very Large Array (VLA)—at 28 miles the speed of light becomes significant enough (think ping times in computer networking) that it must be accounted for in a precise fashion. |
