説明 | "It was only after 1900, over 40 years after the start of the fire, that W.A. Lathop, President of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, came up with the plan that would permanently end the Summit Hill fire. Lathop’s plan called for a 274-m (900 ft)-long clay barrier built from the surface down to the water line. The clay would be supported by two concrete walls, 18 m (60 ft) in height and 3.7 m (12 ft) wide. Each concrete wall had “windows” built in at regular intervals. When wet clay and sediment were poured in, they would seep through on both sides. The material would fill in any voids, preventing the fire from advancing. Lathrop’s plan worked, and by 1910 the fire was extinguished." - Vice, D. H., Aurand, H. J., & Andel, N. M. (2018). The Summit Hill Coal-Mine Fire, Pennsylvania.
