| 説明 | Constructed circa 1867 to house the Avery Normal Institute, this Italianate-style school building was built during reconstruction for one of the first tuition-free secondary schools for people of color in the Charleston area. By 1880, the school had a student population of about 500, remaining privately funded as a charitable venture until 1947, when it became public. One of its most notable alumni, Septima Poinsette Clark, was regarded by other civil rights leaders in the 1960s as being “The Mother Of The Movement.” The building today is owned by the College of Charleston, and is known as the Avery Research Center for African-American History and Culture, which serves as a research library and museum for the experience of people of color in Charleston during the 19th Century and early 20th Century. |
