説明 | The Cathedral of the Forty Martyrs is an Armenian cathedral located in al-Jdeida. I can't exactly remember the story behind the eponymous shaheed, though the custodian of the cathedral did tell me (in perfect English). Something about a group of Christian converts that the Romans tried to drown, but couldn't, and had to execute another way, I think. I'm not sure whether the tradition is purely Orthodox or not - I certainly don't remember it from my RC upbringing.I couldn't take pictures inside, so I just took a couple of the courtyard - this is a memorial commemmorating the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Inside is a wealth of beautiful icons, including a great many of St George, who is very popular in these parts (not that most Britons would realise). |
