The current lighthouse was built in 1877, replacing an earlier tower built in 1852 and is on the southeast end of Devils Island, at the mouth of Eastern Passage. It is a tapered white octagonal wooden tower.Tower Height: 11.89 meters (39ft)Light Height: 15.85 meters (52ft) above water levelOperational: This light is no longer operatingIn 2012, a storm flattened the keeper’s dwelling - right side, which had been built in the 1930s. In 2011 on the right of the island, a square, skeletal, steel tower was erected to display a light.Legend:Devil's Island was originally called Rous' Island, later to Wood Island, and later it was changed again to Deville's Island, which became anglicized to "Devil's Island". Devils Island is the location of a famous local legend. One of the residents of the island had a party with some friends and after some drinking he went outside for a moment and returned very upset, stating he had seen the devil in the form of a halibut that came from the water to speak to him. The next day he was found dead in his boat and some say there were prints of cloven hooves in the sand of the island beach. |
