| 説明 | Over time, the surface of the volcanic basalt rocks in Petroglyph National Monument, NM, darken with exposure to sun, wind and rain, called desert varnish, but the interior of the rocks remains light in color. The ancient residents of the area used stone tools to chip away at the dark material until the lighter material was exposed to create the petroglyphs here. This rock had a big chip removed to show visitors the difference in color. |
