説明 | Soon after admiring some of the magnificent Thangka paintings in the mail hall downstairs in the Thangka school in the Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Bhaktapur, Nepal, came the mandatory hard sell, encouraging me to buy a couple of them. So here I am, looking at some of the Thankga paintings on sale. The prices of most of the originals were through the roof, costing over a thousand US dollars, some running into several thousands. When I told him that was way over budget, the official in the picture brought out several replicas, made by novice monks and trainees. I bought one, and that itself cost me over $ 150. Over the following centuries Tibetan painting, both on walls and Thangka, continued to evolve it's own distinctive style, balancing between the two major influences of Indo-vNepalese and Han Chinese painting styles, despite Buddhism itself being in general decline in these regions. Thangka styles do vary considerably between the different regions of Tibet as well as the wider region of central and SE Asia where tangkas were painted. Within Tibet the regions nearer Nepal and the rest of China were often more influenced by regional styles. Bhutanese Tangkas were mainly influenced by Central Tibet. The different monastic orders also developed somewhat different stylistic characters of Thangka painting. (Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Nepal, Oct/ Nov 2019) |
