| 説明 | Far view of the Hanuman temple in the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar square which gives the square it's name. My guide pointed in the general direction and said 'Hanuman temple', so I'm not sure if it is the white one in the foreground or the fabulous 3-tiered one in the background though. The literal meaning of Durbar Square is a place of palaces. (Durbar means Royal court in Hindi, so there is always a royal reference if you use toe word Durbar). There are three preserved Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu valley including this one here in Kathmandu. The other two are the ones in Lalitpur/ Patan (see previous pictures earlier in this album). In addition, there is one more unpreserved Durbar square Kirtipur, which does not appear to be on the tourist trail. The Kathmandu Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square is comprised of heritage buildings representing the four kingdoms of Kantipur, Lalitpur/ Patan, Bhaktapur and Kirtipur- the ones I have just mentioned above. The oldest building in this Kathmandu Durbar square is from the Licchavi dynasty. The Kathmandu Hanuman Dhoka/ Durbar square complex has 50 temples in it's fold, which are spread out over two quadrangles of the Durbar Square. The outer quadrangle has the Kasthamandap, Kumari Ghar, and Shiva- Parvati Temple; the inner quadrangle has the Hanuman Dhoka palace. The historic temples in both the quadrangles/ squares were were severely damaged in the devastating April 2015 earthquake and some of them are undergoing repairs.
