説明 | Another head on view of the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha) main hall of the Todaiji (also spelt Todai-ji) temple in Nara, Japan. This temple is located at the end of an L shaped corridor just beyond the Naidaimon Gate which we have just passed. (see previous pictures earlier in this album). Several free ranging Sika deer roam about in the area just behind the Nandaimon gate, but surprisingly, the deer somehow do not go beyond the gate into the temple grounds itself. Tōdai-ji is a Buddhist temple and the world's largest wooden building (8th century). The sheer size of the structure somehow seems to hide the sheer number of people milling about outside the shrine. And I simply love those Viking helmet-like horns right at the top of the structure! A landmark in Nara, the Todaiji Temple is listed as one of the eight Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Constructed in 752 by Emperor Shomu, most of the buildings in Todaiji Temple were destroyed by fires and earthquakes throughout the years. Although the temple was reconstructed in 1692, little of the original buildings actually remain. And despite it's reputation of being the largest wooden structure in the world, the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha) main hall you see here is only three quarters of it's original size.
