| 説明 | When I was a teen, living in the Rathbone area of Marietta Ohio, I often camped out with my good friends during the summer months. One of the places we pitched a tent was on top of a hill behind the old Washington County Children's Home. The hillside was used as pastureland belonging to the WCCH, and because it was usually grown over with tall grass and weeds, it was an easy place to find concealment and not far from where we lived in the neighborhood. Late one evening, about the time the group was getting settled in, we were aroused by the sounds of laughter and children running past the opening of our tent. As we had no fire and it was dark as pitch, we saw nothing, and soon went back to our sleeping bags. A few minutes later came the same sounds; children running by and laughing as they went. As we were determined to ambush the camp crashers, we stealtily stationed ourselves outside to catch the pranksters. But as the minutes passed we heard nothing and saw noone and decided that whoever it was must have given up. We went back to the tent and listened, but nothing more was heard that night. A couple of months later we camped in the same area, not far from the top of the hill where a radio signal tower stands. We played around on the tower, seeing who could climb the highest and waited until it was too dark to see the rungs of the long ladder that seemed to reach into the stars.Long after midnight we again encountered the same experiences as before; a group of children running by and laughing as they went. We tried our best to recognize who it might be, but just couldnt figure out what was happening. It only happened one time that evening, we hardly slept, and was the last time that we ever camped there together. No one ever came forward and we never heard another word about it. Many years had passed since that time, and one day while looking through a photo history book of Marietta, I came across an old image of the Washington County Children's Home. Shown behind the home on the hillside was a small cemetery. This was very close to where we had camped. I was taken back to those nights as clear as the evenings we experienced the running and laughter sounds. 77 children lay in this field on the hill behind the former Washington County (Ohio) Children's Home, born between 1866 and 1910, the oldest appearing to be only 13 years old. This plaque was erected in 1982 and gives the names, births and deaths of each child. For many years, up until the time of the memorial dedication, the cemetery had been forgotten.Could we have experienced a paranormal visit by some of these children who never achieved adulthood? I've wondered about it for a long time. Today I decided to go there and see for myself where these children had been laid to rest. Not surprisingly, the cemetery is only about 20 yards away from where we camped. |
