| 説明 | A Japanese newborn- having babies is service to the nation, in a way! While Japan is grappling with an alarming fall in the birth rate, it was refreshing to see a handful of new mothers with their newborn toddlers in the places I visited in Japan. This little fellow is in Hiroshima- I am on the tram (streetcar) to the Peace Dome- the ugly footprint left by the US due to their dropping an atom bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Seated right next to me on the tram was the cutest of babies- a Japanese boy. Now isn’t he simply adorable? The mother was quite friendly and allowed me to take pictures of her little fellow. I was tempted to take a picture of the mother as well, with her baby, but that would be pushing my luck too far- she got off a couple of stops later anyway. It's generally the custom in SE Asia to place a small cash token in the hands of a newborn, but I was in Hiroshima for just a few hours, and I did not want ot commit a cultural faux pas in those limited few hours, as I do not really know if the Japanese follow that tradition!
