| 説明 | German horse trainers and organizers of the Mustang Makeover Germany get a tour of the BLM Wild Horse Corral in southeast Oregon, Jan. 28, 2020.German horse trainers visited the BLM Oregon wild horse corral last week, selecting nearly 50 horses that will eventually find homes in Europe.Last week’s visit, during some frigid conditions in Hines, Oregon, continued a relationship between the BLM corral and the Mustang Makeover Germany event that began in 2017.The events in Germany are styled after the popular American series, pairing trainers with a wild horse for a period of time, leading up to a stadium competition and ultimately an auction for the now-trained horse.Almost every single horse in the history of the German competition originated from the rangelands of southeast Oregon, something the German organizers say is a testament to the hardiness and agreeable nature of the state’s wild horses.“I really must say we love the Oregon horses,” said Silke Strussione, who co-founded Mustang Makeover Germany with her partner, Michael Strussione. “We’ve really fallen in love with them, so because of this we are coming back every year,” she said, adding that they have also placed horses in several Scandinavian countries.All of this year’s horses, 15 chosen for private purchase and 33 selected for the competition, came from the Warm Springs Herd Management Area or were born in the BLM corrals from Warm Springs mares.Those wild horses were gathered and removed from the range in 2018, something the BLM is mandated to do in the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, to preserve healthy rangelands and herd populations.There are good horses in Germany but most are bred for sport, and the typical horse owner just wants to ride on a trail, said Michael Strussione.“They want to have fun with their horses, they want to build a relationship,” said Strussione.Rob Sharp, the manager of the BLM Oregon corral, said the ongoing collaboration is an example of the desirability of Oregon mustangs within the U.S. and abroad.“We plan to continue our partnership with Mustang Makeover Germany, with the goal of placing quality horses into quality homes, regardless of where home may be,” said Sharp.At last summer’s event in Germany, horses featured were from three different herds in southeast Oregon, and all were eventually sold at auction.The winning bid prices ranged from $9,000 to $22,000.Thanks to events like this, people in Europe are now aware of American wild horses and the chronic overpopulation issues, and more are stepping up to help, said Silke Strussione.“I think one of the most important things is that people want to help the mustangs,” she said, “They want to give them a home.”Read the history of the partnership and how the horses get from southeast Oregon to Germany ➡ goo.gl/gXYmTkBLM photos: Tara ThissellRelated:See photos from the 2019 Mustang Makeover Germany: ow.ly/BMi550yewWU💦 BLM hauls water to save wild horses this past summer: youtu.be/5y6QsBp2ZGA🐎📲 Learn how to adopt your own wild horse: wildhorsesonline.blm.gov/ See more wild horse photos: ow.ly/bEZE50yexE3 |
