ShookRemark: Constructed in 1909, three years after the founding of Gary, this 133-foot tall tower containing a 290,000 gallon tank was listed as "endangered" by Indiana Landmarks but was demolished in 2020 by the Indiana-American Water Company. The structure was designed by John W. Alvord of Chicago. The tower was 30 feet in diameter and sat on eight 90-foot steel columns. The Gary Heat, Light, and Water company wrapped the tank in a octagonal concrete block shell with a decorative cornice and parapet wall. It was the gem of Gary's Jefferson Park.Copyright 2020.
