説明A visit organised by the "WW1-WW2 Defensive Structures ROC Posts And Memorials in Wales" Facebook group on a very (VERY) wet and rainy Saturday in January 2020. Forgive the poor photographs - a high ISO, constantly wet lens and camera combined with a bright foggy background and wet stone wasn't great! I will get back here in the summer for a better explore. -----------This group of positions demonstrates quite concisely the hasty nature of mid-1940 defences. Britain had barely scraped through the evacuations of Dunkirk, losing a vast amount equipment; vehicles, artillery, machine guns. This would have been crippling against the might of the Germany Army blitzkrieg if they had followed through after Dunkirk and pushed across the channel. There are a number of section (around 7 men) and half-section posts (3-4 men equipped with rifles) constructed from concrete, bricks and local stone. Concrete was in short supply due to the rapid construction of defences, with priority going to those on the south coast. This can be seen in some of the poor quality structures made from cement and a high proportion of rough aggregate stone. There are also a number of rudimentary dry-stone defensive positions in the field; effectively trenches lined with local stone, or stone being used as a parapet. It's possible that a number of these may have accommodated machine guns or mortars. At the front of the stop-line is a formidable row of anti-tank blocks, both east and west of the road. Those on the east (7 in total) have been shuttered in corrugated iron and cast in concrete, with a likely solid core of local stone. The blocks on the west (approximately 70) follow the line of the river and appear to have been constructed from local stone which has been infilled with concrete and local stone aggregate. For any vehicles this ground would be almost impassable, the blocks seem slightly unnecessary, but would certainly have created a sufficient obstacle to any invading force.
