| 説明 | A coastal observation post on the harbour wall at Donaghadee. Similar in design and construction to other posts around the Northern Ireland coast, I estimate these posts to have been constructed around the time of WW1. I have not yet found documentary evidence of these posts, and will research to find more locations around the coast. This post is very similar to that on the nearby Ballyquintin Point. Constructed of local rock and concrete, with a cement render, they have both been roofed with a cast concrete, flat roof. The 5-sided bay at the front had large windows for observation, which have been filled up in this example; the small slit loopholes are a later addition. The post is accessed by an offset door to the rear, on the left side at Donaghadee, but on the right at Ballyquintin. Air vents are provided at ground level to the front and at head height to the rear. There is also evidence of ground level brackets under the windows, and it is assumed there were to secure shutters, most likely steel, in place when they were open. |
