説明A 1954 cocktail dress by Jacques Fath (left) and a 1950s cocktail dress by Pierre Balmain.Fath is considered one of the primary influences on post-war French fashion, although he is all but forgotten today.Jacques Fath was born 6 September 1912 in Maisons-Laffitte, France. His father was an insurance agent, but his grandfather was a painter and his great-grandparents fashion illustrators and writers. Extremely effeminiate, he showed a talent for dressmaking and art at an early age. Nevertheless, his father forced him to study bookkeeping and law at the Commercial Institute in Vincennes. After his required year in the French Army, he became a bookkeeper and then trader on the Paris stock exchange in 1930. After director Léonide Moguy cast him in a film, Fath enrolled in drama school in 1933. Befriending model and former Coco Chanel secretary Geneniéve Boucher, he began educating himself about fashion and costume design. Fath opened his first boutique in 1937 at 32 Rue la Boétie with dressmaker Madame Gulbenkian. Fath married Boucher (a lesbian) in 1939. Her assymetical drape dress and fluttering cape caused a sensation, drawing the attention of Vogue. Drafted into the French Army in late 1939 and trained as a gunner, he was captured shortly before fall of Paris. With the French Army dismantled, he returned to haute couture, opening a new, larger studio in 1940 and expanded into an even larger space at 39 Avenue Pierre-Ier-de-Serbie in 1944. During this time he hired a number of emerging fashion designers, including Hubert de Givenchy, Guy Laroche, and Valentino Garavani. He believed that sensation drove haute couture, and held annual costume balls at his home in which he dressed models in his designs. To promote his designs in America, he and Boucher toured major cities for three months. Her wardrobe included 35 different outfits, 17 different hats, 16 pairs of shoes, 10 handbags, four umbrellas, and a wide assortment of accessories. He started a perfume line in 1946, a menswear line and a boutique in 1950, and a ready-to-wear line in 1954. Diagnosed with leukemia in 1952, Fath died on 13 November 1954. House of Fath operated until 1957, then ceased to make clothing and produced only perfumes and accessories. Since the 1980s, it has had a large number of owners.Pierre Balmain was born 18 May 1914, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, France. His father was a wholesale drapery retailer. His father died when he was seven, and his mother moved the family to Paris where she opened a fashion boutique called Galeries Parisiennes with her sisters. He began showing an interest in haute couture after being impressed by the well-dressed society women he saw in his mother's shop. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1933, studying architecture and drawing dresses for fashion designer Robert Piguet to earn money. He visited the design studio of Edward Molyneux in 1934, who was so impressed with Balmain's artistry that he hired him. Balmain joined the House of Lucien Lelong in 1939, during which time he met Christian Dior. He opened the House of Balmain in 1945. He initially mimicked DIor's New Look, but by 1947 had developed his own style which was promoted by Gertrude Stein. He introduced an Australian-influenced line in 1947, a perfume line in 1947, and a ready-to-wear line in the United States in 1951. Erik Mortensen, a student of the Danish designer Holger Blum, began as an assistant at House of Balmain in 1948, and the two became lovers as well as co-designers. He designed the French Olympic Team's uniforms in 1968. Balmain was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Costume Design and won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Costume Design for Happy New Year in 1980). He designed costumes for 16 films, including the Brigitte Bardot vehicles And God Created Woman and La Parisienne. Balmain died on 29 June 1982, from liver cancer.
