| 説明 | *Archived post* I have not posted on my Flickr profile in a while so I am uploading all of my old photos to this account.Often overlooked with the issue of homelessness is the animals owned by this population. Understandably people crave companionship and I personally can’t begrudge them their pets. Most of the homeless also do often take very good care of their animals and it is not an uncommon sight to see someone skip a meal at the expense of their pet’s wellbeing. That being said, with the limited finances of homeless persons it is difficult for them to provide adequate medical care or essentials such as routine vaccinations, spaying, and neutering.Pet ownership itself can cause undue hardship for their owners. Having a pet can limit housing options because of property and breed restrictions, and while many have pets for emotional support, they cannot afford the fees to certify them as such. Pet ownership also limits their owners’ access to medical care, drug treatment, and employment as most individuals will forgo a hospital stay or an inpatient drug treatment program because they do not have anyone to look after their animals.This has ramifications for the community as well. A population with pets that are not spayed and neutered leads to a large number of abandoned, neglected, and abused animals and many more instances of unnecessary euthanasia. Inadequate medical care leads to infectious disease and economically society suffers with the cost burden of animal control.This piece is for the outreach agencies that dedicate themselves to the pets of the homeless community, with a special shout out to Healthcare & Emergency Animal Rescue Team, HEART. They, and other agencies, provide a tremendous service to the community through training, rehabilitation, spaying, neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, parasite control, dental services, and general medical care.
